During the American Revolutionary War, the general that was called the "Swamp Fox" was General Francis Marion. He served in the American Revolutionary War from 1775 until 1783. Working with both the Continental Army and South Carolina Militia, he was a strong adversary of the British in their occupation of South Carolina and Charleston in 1780 and 1781. He continued to fight the British even after the Continental Army had been driven out of South Carolina.

Brigadier General Marion used guerrilla warfare and military strategies to incapacitate the British Army decision making through shock and disruption. He practiced a form of guerrilla warfare in the Coastal Plains. He and his men harassed the British and the Tory forces and kept them from advancing through the colony to North Carolina. He gave General George Washington time to strengthen and enhance the Continental Army. As the Swamp Fox, Marion was a stealthy military commander.

General Marion with his group of men, who were mostly farmers, Native Americans and African Americans, fought in the swamps by attacking at night and capturing British supplies, weapons, and supplies. All of the actions taken by Marion and his group helped in the ultimate defeat of the British at Yorktown.
