Atlantis is mentioned in two of Plato's works, Timaeus and Critias. Plato's writing states the information concerning Atlantis came from Solon who heard of Atlantis while in Egypt. Atlantis, described in Timaeus, was said to have existed in the Atlantic Ocean, an island larger than "Libya and Asia". Plato's other work Critias expands on the description of Atlantis, and described its ending, “But afterwards there occurred violent earthquakes and floods; and in a single day and night of misfortune all your warlike men in a body sank into the earth, and the island of Atlantis in like manner disappeared in the depths of the sea.”

The Atlantis story made a large impact on subsequent literature; writers from Francis Bacon to Ignatius L. Donnelly made use of Atlantis, with Donnelly's work spawning a pseudo-scientific interest in the lost island. Modern scholars essentially agree that Atlantis is a work of fiction, but it has not stopped the development of theories of possible locations. Its location from Europe to the Caribbean to Antarctica has been proposed.
