Which animal is responsible for the spread of heartworm?
The heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) is a dangerous parasite which is spread through the bite of mosquitos. It's a type of filarial worm, a small and rather thread-like roundworm. It's primarily associated with canines, but can and also affect cats, bears, ferrets, and other mammals. Unchecked, it will cause serious damage to the lungs, heart, and major arteries of its host animal. It's very easy to prevent this terrible disease with a monthly treatment, but the cure is a long and difficult procedure.

Three catagories. Animal, vegetable or mineral. Living things are animal. Therefore fleas and mosquitos are animals in that sense.

Here you go, Joseph, Life on Earth is divided into two main Phyla, Plants and Animals, Animals are divided into vertebrates (with backbones) and Invertebrates (without backbones) and are further classified by whether they have exo-skeletons, or endo-skeletons. Exo-skeletal animals are lower order (more primitive, older evolved) animals and include sea dwellers, such as Urchins, Crabs, Molluscs and other shell fish, Star-Fish, Lobsters and Prawns, Land animals include the Insects which are by far the most numerous land dwelling animals and have the most variegated forms and the most complex morphology form the Mosquito (which is the biggest killer of humans, through Malaria, which kills a million+ humans a year and which affects 300-600 million people worldwide) the flea, another insect, is equally rapacious at killing humans, an estimated 60 million people have died from Bubonic plague which is a flea borne disease, mainly from Rat fleas. The other main land dwelling invertebrates with exo-skeletons are the Spiders and Ticks (Arachnida) which are also responsible for many human deaths, especially ticks, through such diseases as Lyme Disease and Rocky Mountain Fever.Endo-skeletal animals tend to be larger than their antiquated cousins, most endo-skeletal (skeleton within) animals tends to be vertebrates (i.e. have a backbone) apart from sharks and some fish, the major classifications are Fish, Amphibians, Reptiles, Birds and Mammals, all fish live in either Oceans or Rivers and Lakes, some fish such as the lung Fish can survive on land for short periods but fish use gills to breathe and thus have to be in a water environment to get their Oxygen supply. Fis, Amphibians and Reptiles are all "cold-blooded" whereas Birds and mammals are "warm-blooded". Apart from the Echidna (An Australian ant eating species) and the Duck Bill Platypus which lay eggs, the Mammals bear their young live and suckle their young, i.e. have mammary glands, which is where the word Mammal arises from. I leave a description of the Plant phyla for another day.

I am amazed at the number of people commenting who genuinely believe insects are not animals. Thankfully there are some amazing explanations added in the comments to counter this belief.

David Reed, did you say Animal Kingdom? If mosquitos are in it, they're animals. Granted Insectia, not Mammalia, but animals, nonetheless.

The question was asked incorrectly. Which ANIMAL is responsible for the spread of heartworm? Mosquitoes are insects, not animals. I still got the question right, but the question was poorly written.
