When Theodore Roosevelt became president in 1901, he moved into the White House with his wife Edith, their 6 children and the largest assortment of pets ever seen in the Executive Mansion.

Teddy Roosevelt was an amateur naturalist and enjoyed sharing his love of the world around him with his children. As a child he was fascinated by the variety of birds he saw. His father had a taxidermist teach him how to mount and stuff birds. When Roosevelt went to Harvard, his original major was Natural History before changing to the study of politics.

Pet animals who came to the White House with the Roosevelt clan include Jonathan Edwards, the bear; a lizard; guinea pigs; Josiah, the badger; pig; dogs; Eli Yale, the blue macaw; hen; rooster; hyena; barn owl; Peter Rabbit; a pony and a snake named Emily Spinach.
