Which artist created this drawing and appears in its pictured reflection?
Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972), commonly known as MC Escher, was a Dutch graphical artist whose paradoxical and geometrical works have captured the imagination of many in the 20th century. He inspired cognitive scientist and physicist Douglas Hofstadter, whose 1979 Pulitzer Prize-winning book "Gödel, Escher, Bach" explored the idea of eternal loops and impossible geometries, a common theme in Escher's illustrations.
Escher's most famous work, "Ascending and Descending" has appeared on album and book covers, and was animated in the 2010 film "Inception". The lithograph shows a rooftop staircase in a square shape, where a trick of perspective makes the people stepping on the staircase appear to be simultaneously ascending and descending in an infinite loop.
Between 1924 and 1935, Escher lived in Rome and produced many elegant drawings inspired by Italian architecture. Another landmark which would influence Escher's work was the Alhambra castle in Granada, Spain, which features elaborate Islamic geometrical patterns and mosaics.
Some have compared Escher's fascinating and mathematically-inspired drawings to those of Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Dürer and Holbein. Perhaps noteworthy is a characteristic that all these artist shared: like Escher, they were all left-handed.
Master of infinite spaces, it is only fitting that an asteroid, the 4444 Escher was named in his honor in 1985.
