'The Aeronauts' is a 2019 adventure film based on the 2013 book 'Falling Upwards: How We Took to the Air' by Richard Holmes (born 1945). The film stars Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones as the lead characters. In the book, Holmes writes a non-fictional account of the 1862 flight of British aeronauts James Glaisher (1809-1903) and Henry Coxwell (1819-1900), whose hot air balloon broke the world flight altitude record when it reached a height of 30,000 to 36,000 ft (9,000 to 11,000 m).

The film is only loosely based on the 1862 flight and replaced Henry Coxwell with the fictional pilot Amelia Wren (Jones). Wren and James Glaisher (Redmayne) successfully launch the balloon but soon run into a violent storm. Throughout the film, both characters have flashbacks to the events leading up to the launch, including the times other scientists mocked Glaisher's project. Determined to prove they could succeed with their mission, Wren and Glaisher fight against the storm, rising higher and higher into the air.

'The Aeronauts' was nominated for several awards, including 'Best Equality of the Sexes' at the 16th Women Film Critics Circle Awards. Whilst some people praised the film for its equality, others complained that it did not conform to the time it was set and removed a key figure (Coxwell) from the story. Critics suggested it would have been better to focus on real women, for instance, Sophie Blanchard (1778-1819), the first woman to work as a professional balloonist.
