Quito is the closest capital city to the equator. It is the capital of Ecuador, a country in South America. The city is built on a long plateau at an altitude of 2,820 metres (9,250 feet). Due to this and its positon near the equator, Quito has an average temperature of 15.6 °C (60.1 °F).

Ecuador eventually gained its independence on 24th May 1822, thus making Quito an independent city.
As of 2011, the city's population is over 2,239,191 people. There are approximately 130 monumental buildings in the city, many of which are found in the Historic Centre of Quito. The area is considered to be one of the most important historic areas in Latin America.
