Maruti is a Sanskrit name referring to Hanuman. Lord Hanuman is a Hindu god, companion and ardent devotee of the god Rama. He is the son of the wind god Pawan Dev, who is in several stories played a direct role in Lord Hanuman's birth. He is one of the central characters of the Hindu epic Ramayana.

The Maruti Udyog Limited was founded by the government of India in February 1981 only to merge with the Japanese automobile company Suzuki in October 1982. The first manufacturing factory of Maruti was established in Gurugram, Hariyana, in the same year. The examples of models of cars under the names of Maruti are Maruti 1000, Maruti Esteem. Maruti 1000 was in India between 1990 and 2010. Maruti Esteem in 1994 was an upgraded version.
