In the 1994 American movie ‘The Lion King’, there are a number of characters who encounter hyenas. Mufasa is the leader of a pride of lions in the wild. He has a jealous brother named Scar who seeks to replace him and lead the pride. Scar says, “I’m surrounded by idiots,” reflecting his thoughts about hyenas who are enemies of the lions.

In spite of Scar’s disdain for hyenas, he solicits their help and they become his loyal followers up until the end of the movie. The hyenas first appear in the Elephant Graveyard where the young cub male lion Simba and friendly female cub Nala venture into while exploring. They are chased by the hungry hyenas in an attempt to kill them. Fortunately, they are frightened off by Simba’s lion father Mufasa.

Later in the film, the hyenas help Scar kill his brother Mufasa by triggering the wildebeest stampede. Afterwards, Scar lies about what happened and tells Simba to run away and never return; Scar commands the hyenas to kill Simba, the natural heir to lead the pride of lions. Simba eludes the clumsy hyenas and it’s years later into Scar’s reign that Simba returns to overthrow Scar.

While the hyenas join Scar in the battle for supremacy, most are defeated. The defeated Scar again lies and tells Simba the hyenas are his enemy. When the hyenas overhear this they turn on Scar and kill him.

In another scene in the movie, it is the male meerkat Timon, the adopted father and best friend of Simba who says, “Hyenas, I hate hyenas.”
