Shanghai is one of the four direct-administered municipalities of the People's Republic of China. It is under the direct administration of the State Council of China. The city is located on the southern estuary of the Yangtze, with the Huangpu River flowing through it. The city has various nicknames in English, including "Pearl of the Orient" and "Paris of the East".

With a population of 24.28 million as of 2019, it is the most populous urban area in China and the second most populous city proper in the world. Shanghai is a global center for finance, research, technology, manufacturing, and transportation, and the Port of Shanghai is the world's busiest container port.

Shanghai has been described as the "showpiece" of the booming economy of China. Featuring several architecture styles such as Art Deco and shikumen, the city is renowned for its Lujiazui skyline, museums and historic buildings—including the City God Temple, Yu Garden, the China Pavilion and buildings along the Bund. Shanghai is also known for its sugary cuisine, distinctive dialect and vibrant international flair. Every year, the city hosts numerous national and international events, including Shanghai Fashion Week, the Chinese Grand Prix, and ChinaJoy. In 2018, Shanghai hosted the first China International Import Expo (CIIE), the world's first import-themed national-level expo.

Oh come on there are at least 12 cities known as Paris of the East, inc, St Petersburg and Beirut

The description Paris of the East has been liberally applied to a large number of locations,[1] including: Baku, Azerbaijan[2] Beirut, Lebanon[3] Bucharest, Romania[4] Budapest, Hungary[5] Cairo, Egypt[6] Esfahan, Iran[7] Hanoi, Vietnam[8] Irkutsk, Russia[9] Istanbul, Turkey[10] Jaipur, India[11] Kabul, Afghanistan[12] Lahore, Pakistan[13] Leipzig, Germany[14] Manila, Philippines[15] Phnom Penh, Cambodia[16] Pondicherry, India[17] Prague, Czech Republic[18] Riga, Latvia[19] Ross Island, India[20] Saigon, Vietnam[21] (also known as the Pearl of the East) Saint Petersburg, Russia[22] Shanghai, China[23] Warsaw, Poland[24] None of the choices are included in this list! Beirut and St. Petersburg would be the most legitimate. Another bogus question.

Pat Askew, The correct answer IS included in your list but that is of no matter. Several of the cities on your list border on the absurd for such a title and at least half are not in “the East”... east of what? The actual Paris? The only relevant factor is that Shanghai is the correct choice from among the options listed. Karen Wolf has hit the heart of the matter.

Albeck1994, Were any of those 12 listed among the options? At least, all of the options listed, as absurd as three of them are, are in “the East.” St. Petersburg and Beirut are not.
