Which city was the capital of Australia from 1901 to 1927?
Melbourne was founded in 1835 as a small agricultural settlement, 47 years later, after the foundation of the first European settlement on the continent. Thanks to the Gold Rush the territory developed very quickly and by 1865 it became one of the largest and most important cities in the country.
Within the period of 1901 – 1927, it even served as a capital of the country being home to the seat of national government. In 1927, the capital was moved to Canberra which is the current capital of the country.

Yes well there was too much jealousy for it to be "named" the Capital,so they went to a lot of trouble to set up Canberra and have now got a lovely Capital miles from anywhere.

It was the seat of Parliament for the first 26 years but never the actual capital. They searched for a suitable location, supposedly halfway between the two largest cities of Sydney and Melbourne and declared Canberra the winner and capital of Australia.

yes, I was born in Melbourne 1943, Canberra is the capital now, it is an aboriginal name meaning "the meeting place" i believe . Canberra is about 100 mile south of Sydney, the city was designed in a world wide competition that was won by an American named Burly Griffin. Thus the name Lake Burly Griffin that all the Embassy's are around. Hope I have my facts and info correct.

Anyone in Sydney will tell you the only good thing about Melbourne is the road out and of course in Melbourne they say the only good thing about Sydney is the road out. Canberra is supposedly equidistant between the 2 but is in fact slightly nearer Sydney
