Which city was the hometown of Rhett Butler in the 1939 Hollywood classic film "Gone With the Wind"?
Rhett Butler is a fictional character in the 1936 novel "Gone with the Wind" by author Margaret Mitchell and in the 1939 Hollywood film adaptation of the same name.
The role of Rhett Butler would prove to be significant for American actor Clark Gable (1901-1960), sometimes referred to as "The King of Hollywood".
As the novel and film begin, Rhett Butler is first mentioned at the Twelve Oaks celebration, in the home of John Wilkes and his family. He is described as "a visitor from Charleston", a black sheep who was expelled from West Point and is not received by any family with reputation in the whole of Charleston, and perhaps all of South Carolina.
It is later gossiped he was disowned by his father in Charleston for refusing to marry according to his father's wishes, and he instead set off on his own and made a fortune in the California Gold Rush of 1849.
In 1861, he met Scarlett O'Hara and Melanie Hamilton at the aforementioned Twelve Oaks celebration, and he became reacquainted with O'Hara in 1862. Butler later married Scarlett after the death of her second husband, Frank Kennedy, with her seeking only financial stability.
Rhett eventually leaves telling O'Hara that he didn't care about what she did or how she would manage.
