Which country is called The Land of the Thousand Lakes?
Finland earned the nickname The Land of the Thousand Lakes because it is home to over 187,000 lakes.
Finland has over 188,000 lakes and around 180,000 islands, many located in the Lakeland district, the largest in Europe. Finnish Lakeland is a blue labyrinth of lakes, islands, rivers and canals, interspersed with forests and ridges, stretching for hundreds of kilometres in a placid and staggeringly beautiful expanse.
It is the largest of the four landscape regions into which the geography of Finland is divided.
Lakes occupy about 25% of the Lakeland. Much of the territory is forested and has a low population density. If lake is defined to be a body of standing water larger than 500 square metres (5,000 square feet), then there are 187,888 lakes in Finland. On average, there are 40 lakes per 100 square kilometres (38.6 square miles) in the district.
