Jerome Klapka Jerome (2 May 1859 – 14 June 1927) was an English writer and humourist, best known for the comic travelogue "Three Men in a Boat" (1889). Jerome sat down to write "Three Men in a Boat" as soon as he returned from his honeymoon.

Montmorency is the dog in this story. He is a cute looking fox terrier, and the narrator describes the dog in a bit of humorous detail near the end of chapter two. The narrator tells readers that he didn't think much of the dog at first. In fact, the narrator believed that the dog wouldn't live on Earth that long.

"Oh, that dog will never live. He will be snatched up to the bright skies in a chariot, that is what will happen to him".

The narrator thinks this because Montmorency is such a small bundle of energy that he'll get himself into a bad situation and not be able to make it out. The narrator even describes the dog as angelic. He thinks the dog is just too cute and innocent to defend himself.
