Which European capital city was formerly known as "Reval"?
Tallinn, the capital of the Baltic state of Estonia, was known as "Reval" (with some variant spellings) from the 13th century until the start of the 20th century. This name is first alluded to in the Norse epic "Njal's Saga", written in the 13th century but describing events of several hundred years before. It appears to be simply a reference to a neighbouring county.
The settlement itself is ancient, with evidence of human habitation dating back to at least 5,000 years ago. It became strategically important in the Middle Ages, and was a member of the Hanseatic League, a trading alliance that flourished all over Northern Europe for several hundred years. The name was officially changed in 1918.
Since Estonia gained independence following the dissolution of the USSR in 1991, Tallinn has been a flourishing city, and has hosted various events, including the 2002 Eurovision Song Contest! In 2023 it will be officially recognised as the Green Capital of Europe.
