Which European country colonized most of West Africa in the late 19th century?
At the Berlin Conference of 1884, the European countries divided the African continent into colonies to be occupied and ruled in what's now referred to as the "Scramble for Africa." French West Africa (France's colonies) consisted of over a dozen countries including Mali, Senegal, Algeria, Burkina Faso, Benin, and Chad. The territory totaled nearly 2 million square miles. French West Africa was dissolved in 1958.
