In 1961 Keith Richards, Mick Jagger and Dick Taylor formed a garage band. In late 1961, the three were joined by Alan Etherington and Bob Beckwith; the quintet called themselves The Blues Boys. On April 7, 1962 they met the members of Blues Incorporated, who included Alexis Korner, the slide guitarist Brian Jones, the keyboardist Ian Stewart and the drummer Charlie Watts. After a meeting with Korner, Jagger and Richards started jamming with the group. In June 1962 the line-up of Jagger, Richards, Jones, Stewart and Taylor was completed with the addition of the drummer Tony Chapman. According to Richards, Jones named the band during a phone call to Jazz News. When asked by a journalist for the band's name, Jones saw a Muddy Waters LP lying on the floor; one of the tracks was "Rollin' Stone" (1950, Muddy Waters released).

The band became The Rolling Stones and played their first gig in London on July 12, 1962. In 1981, The Rolling Stones and Muddy Waters performed together at Checkerboard Lounge in Chicago. The Stones have sold more than 250 million albums and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989.

Today, the Stones continue to make music and perform for audiences around the globe. Present members are Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood. Past members include Brian Jones, Ian Stewart, Bill Wyman and Mick Taylor.
