Which famous football manager is nicknamed "The Engineer"?
The Chilean-born football manager Manuel Luis Pellegrini Ripamonti (born 1953) generally known as Manuel Pellegrini, is nicknamed "The Engineer".
Whilst many believe that the nickname relates solely to his methodical and quiet approach, in fact Pellegrini is a qualified civil engineer, graduating in 1979. He showed early talent, and performed well in youth football in his native country, but only made one appearance for the national squad, in a friendly against Brazil in 1986.
He is most famous as a coach. He managed, among others, the Argentinian team River Plate before moving to Europe, where he managed the Spanish teams Villareal, Real Madrid, and Malaga, before moving to England and Manchester City. After an initially indifferent spell, following his debut in 2013, he led them to one of their most successful periods, before leaving in 2016. He has subsequently managed the Chinese team Hebei China Fortune, before returning to the English Premier League to manage West Ham. He is currently (March 2022) back in Spain with Real Betis.
Incidentally, off the pitch, his engineering qualifications were put to good use helping reconstruction in his homeland after the 1985 earthquake.
