Which famous steam locomotive carried the number 60103 when it was withdrawn by British Railways?
In 1962, British Railways announced that it would scrap Flying Scotsman. Number 60103 ended service with its last scheduled run on 14 January 1963. Proposed to be saved by a group called "Save Our Scotsman", they were unable to raise the required £3,000, the scrap value of the locomotive.
After a national campaign the Flying Scotsman was bought in April 2004 by the National Railway Museum in York, and it is now part of the museum's National Collection.

When I commuted to work in Edinburgh I would regularly catch a train called 'The Flying Scotsman'. Sadly it was a train named in its honour rather than the original.

I enjoyed travelling on the Flying Scotsman when it was touring a couple of years ago- sweetly it ran at the Bluebell Railway in Sussex.

The locomotive (1924) was actually called after the 10.00 non-stop out of Kings Cross, which began in the 1880's if I remember rightly.
