Knotts played a small but pivotal role as the mysterious TV repairman in the 1998 film 'Pleasantville". Notwithstanding the fact Knotts is a famous actor, this didn't keep the movie from becoming a box office flop. The unfortunate messages/plots in the film used to make it a "feel good" family film didn't really work.

In this movie, Knotts as the TV repairman is present when two teenagers become trapped in a 1950s sitcom. As the mysterious TV repairman, Knotts quizzes David (Tobey Maguire) about Pleasantville, and then gives him a strange remote control. This film will begin by making fun of old black-and-white TV sitcoms. It continues by pretending to be a sitcom itself; it ends by becoming a surprising social commentary.

A key point in the film happens when the repairman leaves. David and Jennifer (Reese Witherspoon) resume their pointless fighting. They are later transported into the Parker home into their black and white Pleasantville living room. David then tries to reason with the repairman (with whom he communicates through the Parkers' television). He only succeeds in chasing the guy away. David and Jennifer must go on and pretend they are Bud and Mary Sue Parker, the son and daughter on the ever silly TV sitcom show "Pleasantville". At first they appear to be rude, decadent and somewhat dangerous. This changes! They become likable.
