Based on the true story of Rubin `Hurricane' Carter, the 1999 U.S. biographical sports drama, "The Hurricane", is about a young black boxer (played by Denzel Washington). His life is blighted by racism and his career is curtailed once he is unjustly imprisoned for murder. In prison, he struggles to hold on to his pride and writes an autobiography. When an African-American boy and his friends read the book, they become convinced of his innocence and are motivated to battle the establishment on Carter's behalf.

This film depicts Carter's arrest, his life in prison, and the steps taken to obtain his freedom. He was freed by the love and compassion of a teenager from Queens, New York City, New York. Lesra Martin and his Canadian foster family would work very hard to ameliorate the harsh injustice done to Carter. The film received many positive reviews; however, it was criticized for inaccuracies noted at Carter's trials.
