The Santa Claus Melon, or Christmas Melon, is a variety of the fruit originating in Spain, though now also widely cultivated elsewhere, and in the United States especially in Arizona and California. It derives its English name simply from the fact that it is durable, and can be kept until Christmas. It is around 30 cm or 1 foot long, and oval in shape, and has a sweet and mild flavour, not dissimilar to a honeydew melon.

However, its original Spanish name is considerably less festive, and arguably less appetising! This is "Piel de Sapo", which translates as " toad skin". This is explained by its rather mottled green peel. A variant with a yellow skin is more poetically called "Amarillo", which has nothing to do with the American town, but relates to a word for "canary".
