Saul Hudson, professionally known as Slash, was born in Hampstead, London, on July 23, 1965, but raised in Blurton, a small town in Stoke-on-Trent, until age 6, before moving to Los Angeles, California. His mother, Ola J. Hudson (1946–2009), was an African-American fashion designer and costumer, whose clients included David Bowie (whom she also dated), Ringo Starr, Janis Joplin, the Pointer Sisters, Diana Ross, Janet Jackson and John Lennon.
Hudson designed clothing for "The Man Who Fell to Earth" and for "Station to Station". She also created the black pants and waistcoat for David Bowie's "Thin White Duke" look in 1976. Some of the items she designed for Bowie are part of the permanent collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art.
Hudson died on June 5, 2009, of cancer.
