Which heavyweight boxer starred in the film "Mandingo"?
"Mandingo" is a 1975 American historical drama film directed by Richard Fleischer and starring James Mason, Susan George, Perry King, and boxer-turned-actor Ken Norton. The film was released by Paramount Pictures. Norton plays the part of Ganymede (Nicknamed "Mede") a slave who works as a prize-fighter.
Based on the 1957 novel "Mandingo" by Kyle Onstott, and on the 1961 play "Mandingo" by Jack Kirkland (which is derived from the novel), "Mandingo" received mixed reviews upon release, but was a box office hit. It was followed by a sequel in 1976, titled "Drum", which also starred Norton.
Kenneth Howard "Ken" Norton Sr. (August 9, 1943 – September 18, 2013) was an American professional boxer who competed from 1967 to 1981, and held the WBC heavyweight title in 1978. He is best known for his fight trilogy with Muhammad Ali, in which Norton won the first by split decision, lost the second by split decision, and lost the final by a controversial unanimous decision. Norton also fought a slugfest with Larry Holmes in 1978, narrowly losing a split decision.
Norton retired from boxing in 1981, and was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1992.
