Which Hollywood actor held the highest U.S. military rank at the end of 1960s?
James Stewart (May 20, 1908 – July 2, 1997), also known as Jimmy Stewart, was a major Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer contract star. Stewart was known for portraying good American middle-class men struggling to resolve crisis situations. In the US military, he had a prominent career and was a World War II and Vietnam War veteran. He rose to the rank of Brigadier General in the United States Air Force Reserve.
When World War II came, Stewart became the first major American movie star to wear a military uniform. He enlisted as a private, but applied for an Air Corps commission and pilot rating as both a college graduate and a licensed commercial pilot. Shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1942, Stewart received his commission as a second lieutenant. Because of his expertise and celebrity status, he was concerned that he would be relegated to instructor duties behind the lines.
In August 1943, Stewart was assigned to the 445th Bomb Group as operations officer of the 703d Bombardment Squadron, and after three weeks he became its commander. During his initial assignments, he flew 12 combat missions, actually leading the 2nd Bomb Wing in an attack on Berlin, Germany.
In July 1959, Stewart was promoted to brigadier general. During his active duty periods, he remained current as a pilot. After 27 years of service, James Stewart retired from the Air Force in May 1968.
