Which is a characteristic of Asian giant hornets?
Asian giant hornet is the world's largest species of hornet. In December 2019, WSDA (Washington State Department of Agriculture) received and verified four reports of Asian giant hornet near Blaine and Bellingham, which are the first-ever sighting in the United States.
While generally not aggressive towards people or pets, the hornets can attack if provoked. Their main target, however, is the hives of honeybees, which they attack and often will destroy, largely by decapitating the bees in the hive, according to the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA). The sting of the Asian giant hornet is far more painful and toxic than that of a honey bee.
They are usually 1.5 – 2 inches in length, have a large orange/yellow head with prominent eyes, with a black and yellow striped abdomen. They form large colonies that usually nest in the ground.
