The genus Accipiter was introduced by the French zoologist Mathurin Jacques Brisson in 1760. The name is Latin for "hawk", from accipere, ''to grasp''.

The Frances Sparrowhawk is found only in Madagascar and live in dense forests, parks and coconut plantations. They live mostly on the edges of forests. It is grey with a light belly. It has orange eyes and feet. The hawks feed on a range of prey including mammals, lizards and frogs. They generally attack flying insects and birds.
