Japan's "mainland" consists of four primary islands: Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu.

Hokkaido is in the northeast and the home of the island's capital city of Sapporo. It is the second largest Japanese island. The island is known for its tough winters and hot summers. It is a wonderful place for camping, and a lot of Japanese people come there to enjoy the beautiful nature of Hokkaido.

Honshu is the largest and most populated Japanese island. While Hokkaido is a great place for recreation, Honshu is a place of business and technology. Its territory is considered the core area of the country, as the capital of Japan, Tokyo, is also located on this island. Honshu is the seventh largest island on Earth.

Shikoku and Kyushu are in the south (Kyushu is in the extreme southwest and Shikoku is to its east).

These four islands are the largest ones, but there are more than 2 thousand other Japanese islands, which are much smaller. The most unusual of them are Ōkunoshima, the Rabbit island, and Tashirojima, the Cat island.
