Which is the only river in Europe that flows from west to east and north to south?
The Danube, which flows through ten countries, is the only river in Europe that flows from west to east and north to south. It is the second longest river in Europe, behind the Volga. It covers 2,888 km and it is formed by the Breg and Breigach rivers that meet in the town of Donaueschingen, in the Black Forest of Germany where it begins and ends in the Black Sea.
A truly international river, its basin collects water from many deltas until emptying into one of the largest deltas and national parks in the world in the Black Sea. It flows through Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine and Moldova. Four capital cities sit on its banks. They are Vienna in Austria, Bratislava in Slovakia, Budapest in Hungary and Belgrade and Serbia.
Its basin, that is the area the water drains from, includes another nine countries. With water collected from nineteen countries, this is the most international river basin in the world. It covers 817,000 square km, almost ten percent of mainland Europe and home to 83 million people.
