In 2004 an advertising company in Fort Lauderdale, Florida wanted to use Johnny Cash's 1963 classic song, "Ring of Fire" to promote a hemorrhoid ointment.

Advertising copy writers with the Fort Lauderdale agency thought the lyrics, ". . . and it burns burns burns, that ring of fire, that ring of fire", were perfect for such an ad.

The song's co-writer and manager of Hank Williams Jr. (Merle Kilgore) said that he had also often thought about the pile cream (Preparation H) possibilities and the words in his song "Ring of Fire" being used in a commercial.

Kilgore said: "On stage, I would say, 'Ladies and gentlemen, I dedicate this song to the makers of Preparation H.' " However, the singer Rosanne Cash, Johnny Cash's daughter, said in Nashville, Tennessee, that she was appalled by the crassness of using the song to promote a hemorrhoid ointment. She said, "It’s a painful love song, most definitely not written for hemorrhoids."

In the end, the Cash family told the public that "the song is about the transformative power of love and that's what it will always mean." The family give up millions of dollars; they refused to allow the song to be licensed for the ad! Johnny Cash died before this ad conflict began; he had a very good sense of humor. Would he have allowed the song to be used? We don't know.
