Pancho Villa attacked Columbus, New Mexico, situated 3 miles north of the border on March 9, 1916. This raid developed into a full battle with the 13th Cavalry regiment successfully repelling the raid. Out of a force of 353, the Americans lost 7 soldiers killed, plus 15 civilian fatalities. Villa's forces suffered over 90 killed and 6 captured. This was a significant loss as the Villa's numbered 483. Villa's force, however, caused substantial damage to the town. Moreover, he claimed victory, citing the capture of 300 rifles and shotguns, 80 horses, and 30 mules. It's not exactly known why Villa attacked Columbus. But the U.S. had meddled in the Mexican Revolution. Villa's ally, President Francisco I Madero had been assassinated in an American supported coup in 1913. Villa, also had recently suffered several huge defeats against his rivals. His once powerful army was a shadow of its former self by 1916. An American kidnap victim accompanying the raid into Columbus, claimed he sought to provoke war between Mexico and the U.S., into which he hoped Germany and Japan would be drawn.

An enraged President Wilson sent the American Punitive Expedition into Mexico after Villa . It was withdrawn in 1917, having failed to capture Villa. Pancho Villa was assassinated in Mexico in 1923 by his political rivals.
