Which modern country was previously called Persia?

In the Western world, Persia (or its cognates) was historically the common name for Iran. In 1935, Reza Shah asked foreign delegates and League of Nations to use the term Iran, the historical name of the country, used by its native people, in formal correspondence. Since then, in the Western World, the use of the word "Iran" has become more common. This also changed the usage of the names for the Iranian nationality, and the common adjective for citizens of Iran changed from Persian to Iranian. In 1959, the government of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, Reza Shah Pahlavi's son, announced that both "Persia" and "Iran" could officially be used interchangeably.

I knew it was because when I was in H.S. in 1969 I dated a boy from Persia. He used Persia or Iran interchangeably. Also, where is Peggy Tinsley's original comment that has so many responses to her. It should not removed once people reply to it.

I guessed correctly, but as several others, I believe historically Persia contained more countries than just the one!!!!!

Modern country? You should say that to the people the Iranian government tortures, abuses and defames... oh, yes, there's that world sponsor of terrorism thing, too. How inconvenient. Industry and mechanization don't necessarily make a country or people, "modern."
