Which movie actor played the attorney Jonathan Wilk in the 1959 film "Compulsion"?
The 1959 American crime drama film "Compulsion" was directed by Richard Fleischer. The film is based on the 1956 novel "Compulsion" by Meyer Levin, which in turn was a fictionalized account of the Leopold and Loeb murder trial. It was the first film produced by Richard D. Zanuck.
Although the principal roles of Judd Steiner and Artie Straus are respectively played by Dean Stockwell and Bradford Dillman, top billing went to Orson Welles. He plays famed attorney Jonathan Wilk making a case for Steiner and Straus, the defendants, saving them from hanging by making an impassioned closing argument against capital punishment. The two men are given life sentences instead.
At the 1959 Cannes Film Festival, Dillman, Stockwell, and Welles each won the Best Actor Award. Additionally, the film was nominated for the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) for Best Picture of the year; Richard Fleischer was nominated for Best Director by Directors Guild of America; and Richard Murphy was nominated for Best Screenplay by the Writers Guild of America.
With moviegoers and pundits, a very large majority decided to give this film a very great review. They especially praised the performances of the actors: "In the crime drama motion picture "Compulsion", the actors have focused on a dark deed and have used it to make a bright and fascinating picture." So, most of the popular film critics at the time said, "There is no other option than to give this film an exceptional approval rating."
