Which musical instrument is generally thought to be closest to the human voice?
The sound of the violin has qualities that resemble the human voice, because it is a bowed and fretless instrument and has a pitch range that isn’t too far from the range of human voice. It has a higher pitch compared to its bowed, fretless relatives like the cello and the double-bass, which helps it cut through the sonic sphere that surrounds it during a performance. So it is culturally attached with a role and significance as a solo instrument.

Very subjective. Many sources claim anything from the Vocoder, to the oboe, cello,,am aerophone, etc. Your worst question yet!

I have some issues with answer choice the cello not the violin is the correct answer I believe

As an experienced Music Educator, in this instance, it is the trumpet. The range most resembles the female voice in range, and it uses air to produce the sound. A very strange and misleading question!

Albeck1994, musicians and listeners alike have long remarked on the Cello's wide range (almost the same as a human voice), its ability to convey warmth and emotion, and the way it can “sing” with phrasing similar to speech or song.
Other contenders sometimes mentioned are:
Violin – for its singing upper register.
Clarinet – for its smoothness and expressive tone.
Trombone – because, with its slide, it can glide between notes like a singer.
But the cello is the one most widely regarded as the closest in timbre and expression as the human voice among EUROPEAN instruments. The Quena, Andean Flute, is on level with the Cello as being close to the human voice.

The pitch of the violin is too high. The cello is usually regarded as the closest tone to the human voice. This is so apparent to anyone that the violin should not have been in the list of choices!!
