Which Native American tribe was massacred at the Battle of Wounded Knee in South Dakota in 1890?

The Sioux are a Native American tribe and First Nations band government in North America. The word Sioux may describe any ethnic group within the Great Sioux Nation or one of the numerous dialects of the nation. There are three parts of the Sioux based on language dialects and subcultures: the Santee, the Yankton-Yanktonai, and the Lakota.

There have been a number of armed conflicts between the people of the US and the Lakota, and the famous and still remembered massacre at Wounded Knee Creek was the last of them. It is also considered one of the key events in the history of the relationships between the two nations. The name "massacre" came from General Nelson A. Miles' letter to the Commissioner of Indian Affairs. It was fixed in history this way.

On December 29, 1890, five hundred troops of the U.S. 7th Cavalry, supported by four Hotchkiss guns (a lightweight artillery piece capable of rapid fire), surrounded an encampment of the Lakota bands of the Miniconjou and Hunkpapa with orders to escort them to the railroad for transport to Omaha, Nebraska. By the time it was over, 25 troopers and more than 150 Lakota Sioux, including innocent women and children, lay dead. It is still unknown who started the fire, as it everything is believed to have begun as a "friendly fire". Anyway, the conditions of the shooting were chaotic, that's why there is still no concrete answer to this question.

The event remains a well-known accident, often observed in popular culture. It is often remembered in many songs, poems and illustrations.

Bewley Steve You can say, in your not so elegant way, what you want, but it doesn't mitigate or justify what white people did to EVERY native American tribe we came across. We took everything we wanted from them, with little regard for them as people. They were considered savages and therefore devoid of any rights or claims to the land they held for centuries. Save your BS for someone who doesn't know any better. BTW, your writing hasn't gotten any better. You are as sloppy as ever and you cant blame Wikipedia this time. Try spelling these words as such: indigenous, thirsty, technology, little, and atrocities.

I am a Proud Cherokee Chief. It is a fact (though not propagated by the Government) that every Treaty signed between Natives and the U. S. Government has been broken...by the white citizens or the Government themselves. Yet they wonder why we don't trust them. Wounded Knee was not a battle, it was a well planned execution and even though women were allowed to go fetch provisions, they were murdered on the way with no witnesses. I am a veteran and fought for this country but with the Government would just be honest and truthful about history and how they stole this continent from its inhabitants and continue to rape the earth instead of caretaking it for posterity. First check your grammar and spelling, it will make your argument a little more credible. The fact is they were here first, the newly arrived people from other continents were the intruders not the Native Americans. As William Laughlin stated the "new Americans" I'm ashamed to say murdered and stole their heritage, a historical travesty. My great grandmother was a full blooded Cherokee, it was frowned upon that my great grandfather married an Indian, as they were considered less human, similar to the belief held about Africian Americans. I'm just curious, do you not have spell check or are you just too lazy to make the appropriate changes as needed?

Bewley Steve Once again, you are wrong. Nadowessi refers to the Ojibwa Nation; Nadowessioux refers to the Ojibwa Nation and the Dakota Tribe; Sioux refers to the Dakota Tribe. Later the US government stuck the Lakota and Nakota Tribe in this word Sioux with the Dakota. The original translation for Sioux is serpent; it can also be translated viper, adder or snake. The word Nadowessi was a serpent. The suffix, "oux", comes from French and when added to the end of of a word, pluralizes it, much like adding an "s" to an English word. Nadowessioux therefore means serpents, NOT thief! The word "Sioux" is the white man's invention. The indigenous peoples never called themselves "Sioux".
