Dick "Night Train" Lane still holds the single season record for defensive interceptions with 14 in the 1952 season, when the regular season schedule included only 12 games. Dan Standifer and Orban Sanders, in 1948 and 1950 respectively, each had 13, also during 12 game seasons, leaving these three players as the only ones to have averaged more than one interception per game in the course of an entire season. Lester Hayes had 13 interceptions as well in the 1980 season, but by this time the NFL regular season had expanded to 16 games.

For modern comparisons to demonstrate the dominance of these players, Deion Sanders, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and considered by many to be one of the best DB's of all time, never had more than 7, and Richard Sherman (pictured), the self-proclaimed best in the league today topped out at 8.
