The Great White Fleet was the popular nickname for the United States Navy battle fleet that completed a journey around the globe from December 16, 1907, to February 22, 1909, by order of United States President Theodore Roosevelt. It consisted of 16 battleships divided into two squadrons, along with various escorts. President Roosevelt sought to demonstrate growing American military power and the great capabilities of U.S. Navy. The hulls of these ships were painted a stark white, giving the armada the nickname "Great White Fleet."

By forming the Great White Fleet, Roosevelt dramatically increased the size of the U.S. Navy. The world tour of the fleet in 1907 was a display designed by the president as a show of force to specifically impress the Empire of Japan which had existed from the Meiji Restoration in 1868 to Roosevelt's presidency.

In the end, Roosevelt was able to greatly expand America's military power all over the world. And, during his nearly eight years as president not a single member of the U.S. forces died in combat.
