Which nickname was given to this original member of the 1990s British pop group the Spice Girls?
Victoria Caroline Beckham, formerly known as Victoria Adams (b. 1974) is an English singer, fashion designer and television personality. She rose to prominence in the 1990s as a member of the popular all-female British pop group the Spice Girls, in which she was nicknamed Posh Spice.
In 1994, Beckham joined the Spice Girls. In the recordings before her marriage, she is credited with her maiden name as Victoria Adams. The group's first single was called "Wannabe" (1996), and she worked alongside Geri Halliwell, Emma Bunton, Melanie Brown and Melanie Chisholm. It went to number one in the United Kingdom and United States, and another 35 countries. It was followed by eight further number one singles from their albums "Spice", "Spiceworld" and "Forever". The girls stopped recording together in 2001. After appearing in a 2007 reunion tour, Beckham opted out on a 2019 tour.
Beckham once shared an insight into how the nickname "Posh" came about, and how she came to like it. "I was given the name Posh in 1996 over lunch with Peter Loraine of 'Top of The Pops' magazine and the rest of the Spice Girls," she said. "I can't say it would've been my first choice, but I ultimately grew into it on my own terms. I was young and shy, and being Posh helped me find my style and confidence, and my voice."
She has been married to retired star footballer David Beckham since 1999, and they have four children. As of May 2019, the couple's joint wealth is estimated at £355 million.
