Leo Tolstoy presented this type of analogy in his novel Anna Karenina : "Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way." By that, Tolstoy meant that for a marriage to be happy, it had to succeed in several key aspects. There has to be love in the family, and the family members must shared things, including things that cause pain and heartache. As Tolstoy stated, they also need to talk to each other.

Today in 2017 medical doctors and family counseling psychotherapists put it simply and say, "any and all family members who needed each other would never live as full and rich a life without the other members."
