Which of all the naturally-occurring minerals of iron is most susceptible to magnetism?
Magnetite is one of the minerals of iron. It is the most magnetic of all the naturally-occurring minerals on Earth. The other three iron ores, namely hematite, goethite and limonite are not susceptible to magnetism at all. Naturally-magnetized pieces of magnetite are called lodestone. The Earth's magnetic field at 0.5 gauss is too weak to magnetize a lodestone by itself. The leading theory is that lodestones are magnetized by the strong magnetic fields of surrounding lightning bolts.
This is supported by the observation that they are mostly found near the surface of the Earth, rather than buried at great depth.
Scientists had discovered lodestone as the only magnetized mass of magnetite.
