The movie begins with the screen displaying the words of Isaiah 53:5 which reads: “He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.” The camera moves in on Jesus praying in the Garden of Gethsemane. He is obviously in anguish, pouring out His heart to God. It is probably the best scene in the entire movie as we see Jesus wrestling with what He knows is coming.

Next, Jesus stops praying and goes to check on his disciples. Three of them are under a tree sleeping so Jesus rebukes them and returns to prayer. Jesus does not find Judas with the three who are sleeping. He awakes the disciples (Peter, James and John) and tells them to watch and pray that they might not fall into temptation.

Judas, one of the disciples, is then shown accepting 30 pieces of silver from the chief priests and religious rulers. The scene goes back to the garden, where Jesus is again praying. Satan is shown making an entrance, which is not in any of the gospel accounts.

The movie then continues from this opening scene until the distressing crucifixion of Jesus. The film actually ends with a brief depiction of Jesus' resurrection. So, with some minor doubts, Mel Gibson as director and producer has produced what a few film critics call a cinematic masterpiece. "The Passion of the Christ" is stunning, and it conveys the final hours in Jesus' life like no other movie has ever done.
