Which of the following 'grottoes' was a sacred sanctuary of Tiberius?
Tiberius (16 November 42 BC-16 March 37 AD) was the second Roman Emperor, reigning from 14 AD to 37 AD. He moved 'Blue grotto' from the Roman capital to the island of Capri in 27 AD. During his reign the 'Blue Grotto' was decorated with several statues. Three statues of the Roman sea gods Neptunes and Triton were rcovered from the floor of the 'grotto' in 1964. Seven bases of statues were also recovered from the 'grotto' floor in 2009. The cave was described by the Roman historian Pliny the Elder as being populated with Triton on a shell. The environmentalist association aimed to restore the 'Blue grotto' to its ancient glory by placing identical copies of the statues.
The 'grotto' was rediscovered in 1826 with the visit of German writer August Kopisch and his friend Ernst Fries. Mark Twain visited the 'Blue grotto' in 1869 and recorded his thoughts. The 'Blue grotto' is sea cave on the coast of the island Caprin, southern Italy. The cave extends some 50 metres (163ft) into the cliff at the surface, and is about 150 metres (490ft) deep, with a sandy bottom. The cave is 60 miles (96ft) and 25 metres (82ft) wide. The 'Blue grotto' is one several caves worldwide that is flooded with a brilliant blue or emerald light.
