Moose are often friendly towards humans, and will approach them for food. At other times they can be very dangerous to humans and their vehicles. A cow is particularly dangerous when she has her calves with her. A bull is quite unpredictable and aggressive during mating season when they are driven by hormones and ready to battle other bulls contending for the same cow. During winter, all moose can be more aggressive when they cannot find enough food. If a moose feels that their young or their potential mate are in danger or they are ravaged by hunger, they are known to charge and cause harm or even death to humans.

Typically a moose will indicate that they are agitated and may charge if they do one or more of the following:

* it stops eating and stares at you

* it lays back its ears and raises the hair on its hump

* smacks or licks its lips, and clicks its teeth

* lowers its head and walks toward you

* urinates

* shows the whites of its eyes

* whips its head back like a horse

Even though moose may appear docile, they can weigh up to 1200 lbs (544 kg), and run up to 30 mph (48km). If it is inevitable that a moose will attack you, there are a few things that you can do to limit or avoid getting hurt. If you have enough time, you should back away from the moose, and run to the nearest barrier to provide space between you and the moose. If it throws you to the ground, you can curl into a ball to protect your head and organs.
