A sobriquet is a nickname, often affectionate, sometimes not, and generally for a person, place or thing. From the French, it's another borrowed word often used in English, pronounced SOH-bruh-kay (the "T" is silent). Some synonyms for sobriquet are handle, moniker, byname, label and alias.

Well known sobriquets include The Big Apple for New York City, The Windy City for Chicago, Sachmo for jazz trumpeter Louis Armstrong, and The King for Elvis Presley. Others include The Graveyard of Empires as a sobriquet of Afghanistan, and even one for an American baseball stadium's infamous 37-foot tall wall which has foiled many home-runs, known as The Green Monster, because of its color.
