Despite what we often see in nativity scenes, the story of the birth of Jesus apparently occurred a bit differently than we might have thought. The Bible records the details in Matthew chapter 2 and in Luke chapter 2. Matthew's account tells of the "Magi" coming to visit without reference to the number of visitors. Verse 11 says "upon coming to the house, they saw the baby with his mother Mary". Three types of gifts are mentioned i.e. gold, Frankincense and Myrrh.

Luke's account tells only of the shepherds visit and gives the details of what they saw. There it is clear they saw the stable and the baby in a manger. The "guiding star" is mentioned by Matthew as respects the Magi, but no star is mentioned by Luke for the shepherds. Many scholars think that the two visits (Shepherds vs Magi) did not occur at the same time. This would make the statement "3 'Magi' visited the stable and the baby was in a manger" the incorrect one.
