The Indian cultural education system took a setback during the British rule but some great schools offering modern education were also established during this period. A few English medium (system that uses English as the primary medium of instruction) schools founded during the British rule are still active and are offering quality education to the students.

George's School also known as St. George's Anglo-Indian Higher Secondary School was founded in 1715 in Chennai (then Madras), Tamilnadu, India as the Military (later Madras) Male Orphan Asylum. It holds the title of being one of the oldest schools in the world, the oldest English medium school in Asia, and the first English medium school in India.

St. George 's School has red brick building on a land of 21 acres (85,000 m) which is situated in Shenoy Nagar, a bustling area in Chennai (Tamilnadu). The school consists of a boarding house, library, National Cadet Corps (NCC), computer room, kitchen, dormitory, and play grounds. The school provides education to over 1500 children from nursery up to +2 level ( Senior Secondary 12th standard class). There are 36 staff members led by the present Head master Mr. Mark Carron. The Chapel and the classrooms are part of CMDA's (Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority) 400 recognised heritage structures in the city.
