Which of the following is the synonym of the word "pothole"?
A pothole is a hole or little pit in a road. Drivers complain about potholes frequently.
If you've ever felt a little bump while in a car, you probably hit a pothole: a little hole in the street caused by wear and tear. Newly paved roads are smooth and have no potholes, but potholes develop over time. Drivers hate potholes because the little bump is startling, and a big pothole could actually damage a car. Eventually, potholes are usually filled in when a road gets paved. Potholes are also called chuckholes.

Chuckhole? I have never heard of the word. I went with Ditch which we use in the UK. When I checked after and according to the Oxford Dictionary of Synonyms Ditch is a correct answer but it doesn't mention Chuckhole at all.

Only potholes in UK but I like chuckholes very descriptive the government is always setting aside money to fill them in but as fast as they do new ones appear. That's life

"Chuckholes". Could only be American. They are called potholes where I come from.

I've NEVER heard the term Chuckhole !

In the 17th and 18th centuries Apprentice potters in the Uk had to go and dig for clay as part of their duties particularly in Staffordshire where it is abundant. They were supposed to dig it up from fields which meant clearing the area prior to digging up the clay. However, it was a lot easier to dig it up from the already cleared roads, which they did, and they were called pot holes. There are many references to accidents and if caught, the apprentice faced a long prison sentence.

Heard and used both terms in southern Michigan back in the 60's and 70's. Started with pothole and later blended in to both as people from elsewhere move to our neighborhood.

Raymond Cardona, I have heard of the term. I always assumed that it referred to holes in the ground that could cause serious injury to horses or cattle caused by groundhogs (aka wood chucks). I'm probably wrong, but that has been my interpretation of the term.
