Which of the following people did not die at the famous “Battle of the Alamo”?
The Texas Revolution (October 7, 1835 - April 25, 1836) resulted in a new country called the “Republic of Texas”. The Texas rebels were colonists from the USA and Mexican Tejanos (Texas Mexicans) who were revolting against the government of Mexico. The “Battle of the Alamo” (February 23 - March 6) at San Antonio de Bexar, ended in a massacre of the rebels by the Army of Mexico led by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. All of the male rebels were killed including former U.S. Congressman Davy Crockett, famous American pioneer, Jim Bowie, and Lieutenant Colonel William B. Travis, the Commander of the Alamo defenders. General Sam Houston was not at the “Battle of the Alamo”.
After the massacre of the “Battle of the Alamo”, Texas rebels were incensed by Santa Anna’s soldiers killing of wounded Texans. Many were bayoneted. A cry went up “Remember the Alamo” where ever the rebels gathered. The Texans beat the Mexican Army and captured General Santa Anna at the “Battle of San Jacinto” on April 26, 1836. Santa Anna soon signed the surrender on May 14, 1836 and Texas became a Republic.
Sam Houston became the first and third President of the Republic of Texas and later upon Texas becoming an American state, was elected to the U.S. Senate.
