Tories are members of two British political parties. The first Tories emerged in 1678 as supporters of the future James II of Great Britain. This political group ceased to exist as a political entity in the 1760's. A couple of decades later a political group coalesced around William Pitt the Younger, becoming known again as Tories and exist today as the Conservative Party whose members are still referred to as Tories and are proponents of traditionalism and conservatism.

There were American Tories but they were supporters of the British during the American Revolution. They were a social group rather than an established political party in the political process.

The American Whig Party (1834-1854) was established mainly as an opposition party to Andrew Jackson and the Democratic Party. Its end came with the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act. Most of its members joined the emerging Republican Party.

The Progressive Party was established as a third party by Theodore Roosevelt during the 1912 Presidential election. By 1918 most of its members had returned to the Republican Party. Although there was a resurgence under Robert M. La Follette Sr. in the 1924 Presidential election. By 1934, it too, had disappeared.

The People's Party, also known as Progressives, were an agrarian-populist party that was a major force in American politics from 1892-1896. It merged with the Democratic Party in 1896, although a smaller independent faction survived until 1908.
