There have only been 10 movie musicals that have won best picture at the Oscars. They are: Chicago (2002), Oliver! (1968), The Sound of Music (1965), My Fair Lady (1964), West Side Story (1961), Gigi (1958), An American in Paris (1951), Going My Way (1944), The Great Ziegfeld (1936), and The Broadway Melody (1928/29).

Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical "The King and I" (1956) did not win the Academy Award for Best Picture, although it was nominated. Yul Brynner did win Best Actor for his role as The King.

The only musical to win The Academy Award for Best Picture in the last 48 years was Chicago (2002). Heightened interest into musicals and the 2017 Academy Awards has been rekindled by the 14 Oscar nominations received by the 2016 film La La Land, including Best Picture.
